Hair Slicking Products: Where Does Paste Sit?

hair paste

If you’ve browsed online sites or cosmetics stores, you’ll appreciate there are a lot of different terms for both women’s and men's hair styling products these days. Hair cream, water-based hair gel, hair putty, pomade and hair paste for men…the list goes on. It's like a list as long as movies are showing at the cinema! Which one is right for you?

At Crazy Bull, we firmly believe in ensuring you get the right product. We want our range to be as comprehensive for all hair types and styles, whether you’re defining a textured crop, prepping a side part or adding the last touches to a modern mullet. We make our hair paste styling products to be functional, unlike some types of products that can be one-dimensional.

How Do I Use Play Hard?

It’s elementary! Once you’ve decided on your desired style, take enough of the product for your hair (this will depend on your hair type, thickness and intended look) and apply it through the hair as you wish it to look.

Does Play Hard work on both damp and dry hair?

The simple answer is yes! Applying the product to dry hair will give you a matte finish, which suits many contemporary men's hairstyles. However, if you want one of those slicked-back styles with a shinier finish, apply Play Hard to wet hair (or towel dry), and you will get a glossier look. The blow-drying process will make the hold somewhat stronger.

Who can use Play Hard?

Anyone! If you’re looking for a product with a firm hold, you can’t go wrong with Play Hard. Of course, there are a few case-by-case variables, such as if you have long hair, it might be hard to get the product to sit—although that is true of all hair styling products. Or, if you have thinner hair, you might best use a non-liquid product like Space Dust styling powder.

Does hair paste work better on wet or dry hair?

The paste itself has no preference! Consider your hair type, thickness, and style. Using it on dry hair will give you a firm hold and a matte finish. However, if you want a stronger hold to keep your classic hairstyle in place, you can use it on wet hair (drying the product in), and you will get an even stronger hold. It depends on what you want from the product.

If your hair is stiff or difficult to work when dry, why not use our Bull Blaster Sea Salt Spray product? This works as a great pre-styler to prepare your hair for further product.

Is hair paste better than gel?

Apples to apples, it’s difficult to say that one hair styling product type is better than another. Each provides its own set of strengths to help individuals reach their hair styling goals. Gels have gone downward in public opinion, with many being mass-produced and low quality. In general, hair paste typically retains a lot more quality. Gels are still better than some strange hybrid products that try to blend two types, such as ‘clay pomade’.

Is hair clay or paste better?

It depends on what you want to achieve and your hair thickness. If you believe you have thicker or coarser hair, then you may be better off using Clay Play. The product is more robust than others, allowing you to express side part hairstyles with more confidence.

How about a wet look?

Okay, if you want a ‘wet’ or ‘shiny look,’ we recommend two potential options. Using the product on wet hair and then styling it while it dries would give you a semi-matte finish, so it would be a bit shinier than if you used it on dry hair.

You could also use our water-based pomade, Bull Blaster. It is ideal for classic, slick styles. The temptation would be to seek out an oil-based hair wax; however, due to poor formulation, these can often contain nasty ingredients.

Does hair paste wash out?

Yes, if you use a good-quality hair paste-like Play Hard, you should have no trouble washing out the product when you use your shampoo and conditioner in the shower or bath. Why not pick up one of our hair care products to wash your hair?
